An exciting combination of Cinco de Mayo traditions including food, beverages and party atmosphere can be found at all our Mattitos locations. Cinco de Mayo, celebrated May 5th, showcases the vitality and culture of Mexico. The celebration commemorates the surprising triumph of the Mexicans at the Battle of Puebla.
On May 5, 1862, a meagerly-equipped Mexican army of four thousand miraculously repelled a heavily-favored French force of eight thousand. The French, with the help of thousands of reinforcements, eventually succeeded in capturing Mexico City and controlling the land. However, after only a three year rule, France was driven from the country by resurgent Mexicans with the aid of the United States. Despite the Battle of Puebla being years before the eventual repulsion, the victory strengthened Mexican resistance against the invading forces and helped create a sense of nationalism, hope and unity.
