Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage, food, music and dance. No restaurant in Dallas honors the occasion better than Mattito’s. Beginning at 5:00pm, the Mexican holiday is commemorated with mariachis, nine-piece salsa band Latin Image, tequila tastings compliments of Sauza Hornitos, mechanical bull rides, games and prizes, and of course, drink specials and cuisine from the award-winning Tex-Mex menu.
Headlining this year’s event in Dallas is the Bob Armstrong queso-eating contest, named for the Texas politician who created the cheesy concoction over a quarter century ago. Not on the menu and a top-secret recipe, Bob Armstrong queso is ironically the restaurant’s most-requested item. The contest winner will receive bragging rights, a trophy, free Bob Armstrong for a year and the chance to defend their title next Cinco
The celebration continues for the second year at Mattito’s Frisco, which opened June 2008 at 6129 Main Street. Radio station KLAK (97.5FM) will broadcast live from 4:00pm-7:00pm and will give away a trip for two to Mexico the following morning on-air – only contest participants that register at Mattito’s are eligible to win. A salsa band officially kicks off the fiesta at 5:00pm, joined by master magician Marty Westerman, a sketch artist, face painter and bounce house. Four dollar margaritas and $3 beer are available 3:00pm-6:00pm, along with the award-winning Tex-Mex cuisine all night.
